About obi records

My partner and I came up with the idea for OBI Records + Venue through our shared interest in R&B music. The result is a brand that highlights current or up-and-coming R&B musicians in a curated shop/intimate venue space.

Compared to its competitors, OBI Records has a more fluid business model that allows for collaboration. The shop also specifically curates RnB records which makes the brand more niche than our competitors who feature a general selection of genres.

Inspiration

We were inspired by Japanese vinyl pressings which are known for their excellent quality.

That led us to discover Japanese obi-strips. Some collectors appreciate obi-strips because they make a record look more authentic.

It also happens to be a ribbon-like sash used in traditional Japanese Kimonos.

We believe that the present is a gift.

Every moment spent listening to music is time well-spent. 

It has the power to move people physically and emotionally. Music can calm, relax, and bring happiness or joy. For many, it is an escape.
